Push Back Storage Racks
Another type of effective storage systems are the push back storage racks. Push Back Racking is a system which caters to high density pallet storage and offers a greater amount of selectivity when compared to drive in/thru racking. The push back storage racks generally offer storage for up to 6 pallets deep and maximum pallet weights of 3,000 lbs.
Similar to selective rack with conventional fork lifts, the push back storage racks are also loaded and unloaded from the front aisle. Each position in the push back racking is picked selectively but the method is FILO which means pallets in each lane are first in last out. These systems are designed around the principle of utilizing the space by depth rather than width. This depth arrangement in the push back storage system greatly reduces aisle space and increases storage density. In this type of the system, each row is multiple pallets deep, and often has wheeled carts that fit onto rails, saving enormous amounts of energy for moving heavy pallets. In this mechanism, when a forklift sets the pallet onto the cart, it drives forward and causes the pallet to hit the next pallet, causing the entire row of pallets to roll backwards. Structural style racking is recommended for push back storage rack system.
